The Centenary Methodist Institute, in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, has been involved in basic education for more than 84 years through the Centenary School and it has expanded its activities to higher education by creating the Methodist College of Santa Maria - FAMES. The official foundation of the Methodist College of Santa Maria took place on April 25, 1998.

FAMES is a private Methodist Higher Education institution that has been developing according to a proposal that seeks to combine ethical values, innovation and quality of its pedagogical practice.

Teaching is capable of systematizing and producing knowledge that responds to the needs of the contemporary world, challenged to prepare the professional of the future for intervention in social development. From this perspective, FAMES, whose main commitments are the socialization and humanization of knowledge accompanied by critical reflection, will prepare academics to face the challenges of a constantly evolving professional career, which is part of a today´s globalized society.

Following its guidelines and the principles of the Law, the Guidelines and Bases of the National Education, FAMES has built its Institutional Development Plan (PDI), containing pedagogical proposals to guide its activities and fulfill the social role of the Church. It commits itself to the technological advance from the perspective of ethics, from the openness to the plurality of social differences, from human solidarity and the formation of citizens aware of their social responsibility.

The institution offers four undergraduate programs (Administration, Accounting, Law, Physical Education), as well as more than 30 postgraduate programs in the specialization modality, on site and at distance categories (EAD), where it acts as a center of the Methodist University of São Paulo.

The programs of FAMES present important differentials, such as qualified lecturers, with teaching and professional experiences; Teaching, research and outreach activities; Academic and scientific events; a Chair of Human Rights, a nucleus of research that aims to propose a reflection on the contemporary conception of human rights, understood in their universality and indivisibility.

FAMES maintains permanent outreach programs that benefit a large part of the population of the city of Santa Maria, in Rio Grande do Sul, which has approximately 300 thousand inhabitants. The actions reach more than 15 thousand people, which means more than 5% of all the residents. Among the actions, stand out the Adult School, the Social Inclusion by the Sport,  the Family Mediation program, among other activities.


In order for students to have complete professional training, the Methodist School of Santa Maria counts on qualified faculty body, specific bibliographical collection to meet the requirements of its programs and various laboratories and spaces for professional practice.

In the library of the institution, students have at their disposal a specialized collection to research the most diverse subjects covered during the program. In addition, Fames offers the Pearson Virtual Library, with over 4,000 digital titles available to students and alumni.

Fames counts on a Gymnasium for multiple sports, a Gym, a Dance and Recreation Room and a Bodybuilding. By means of agreements, it has a Thermal Pool, Paddle and Tennis Courts, Athletics Track, Football Field, an Adventure Sports Company and Activities in Nature.

The students also count on laboratories of Anatomy and Biomechanics, Physical Assessment, Movement Re-education and Informatics. FAMES also has spaces for the Human Rights Chair; Nucleus of Mediation, Negotiation and Arbitration Practices, and a Junior Company.


Santa Maria is located right in the geographic center of Rio Grande do Sul. With a total area of 1,781.8 km², the municipality has 274,679 inhabitants, making it the 5th largest in the  State in terms of population. Due to its geographical position, Santa Maria is also known "heart of Rio Grande".

Economically, Santa Maria has the 4th largest consumption potential in Rio Grande do Sul and 79th in the country, according to Sebrae (Brazilian Service to Support Micro and Small Companies). The city is also home to defense companies like the German armored company KMW.

The municipality is also known as an important defense center for housing more than 20 military organizations, with the second largest contingent in the country (with 7.2 thousand soldiers), comprised by the 3rd Brazilian Army Division and Santa Maria Air Base.

Santa Maria is recognized as an educational center. The city that counts with Centenary Methodist K-12 school and FAMES – the Methodist College of Santa Maria is among the main academic centers of the country. At present it has developed as a center of knowledge and innovation due to the presence of seven higher education institutions, in addition to a network of elementary, secondary and technical education.

The tourism in Santa Maria is quite diverse. The Valley of the Devil is a great choice for nature lovers. As far as history is concerned, it is worth visiting the Mallet Memorial, where Marshal Mallet (1801-1886), the patron of Brazilian artillery, was buried. In the center of the city, the Salvador Isaia Boardwalk is the main commercial center of the city. Other highlights are the Saldanha Marinho Square and the Treze de Maio Theater.
